Well Struck and Desirable 1838-D Half Eagle
1838-D $5 MS61 NGC. Although less rare than its mintage of 20,583 pieces might suggest, this issue is the first D-mint half eagle and, as such, the survivors enjoy considerable popularity among gold specialists. In addition, this is the only Classic Head five dollar struck at the Georgia facility. This rare Uncirculated example is very sharply struck, with luster that is prooflike from many angles. While light abrasions are unavoidable in lower mint state grades, there are no singularly mentionable abrasions. An attractive and desirable coin that is sure to be the bidding focus of many specialists. Population: 4 in 61, 2 finer (9/01).Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 8178, GSID# 8882)
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
Weight: 8.36 grams
AGW: 0.2419oz
