    Description

1836 Classic Head Half Eagle, MS64
    McCloskey 2-B, CAC Approved

1836 $5 MS64 PCGS. CAC. Breen-6509, McCloskey 2-B, R.4. Second Head, Large Date. The obverse has a bisecting die crack through the 6 and bust to star 8 and the border. While the die characteristic is interesting, the scarcity of the Classic Head type in Choice condition is main appeal of this near-Gem coin. For the date, it is a rarity in this grade, and only a few finer pieces are known. Aside from the usual light weakness at the center of the obverse, all design definition is sharp. Both sides have brilliant yellow-gold luster with a hint of orange. A few trivial surface marks on each side are consistent with the grade. Population: 18 in 64 (2 in 64+), 2 finer. CAC: 2 in 64, 0 finer (5/18).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25RY, PCGS# 8174)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 89.92% Gold, 10.08% Copper
