    1838-C Half Eagle, VF35
    Scarce One-Year Charlotte Type

1838-C $5 VF35 NGC. The 1838 Charlotte half eagle is not only the sole Classic Head half eagle struck at the North Carolina Mint, it is also the lowest-mintage five dollar of any date or Mint from the short-lived Classic Head series (where it trails only the 1834 Crosslet 4 in scarcity). This Choice VF example shows the expected nicks and abrasions on its naturally toned surfaces but they are softened by wear. A short mark on Liberty's jawline is the only abrasion to note, and it is minor in context of the assigned grade. The reverse legend is slightly weak but the central motifs retain strong definition. Census: 4 in 35, 84 finer (5/16).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25S5, PCGS# 8177)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
