    Description

    1838-D Half Eagle, AU55
    First Dahlonega Issue
    One-Year Type

1838-D $5 AU55 NGC. McCloskey 1-A, R.3. Doug Winter described the appeal of the 1838-D succinctly and accurately in the third edition of Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861: "The 1838-D is probably the most popular half eagle from this mint. It is a first-year-of-issue and a one-year type as well." The Georgia facility would ultimately strike more than 1 million five dollar gold coins throughout its 24 years of operation, beginning with a mintage of 20,583 examples in its first year. The issue claims one of the higher survivorships among D-mint fives, yet there are not nearly enough coins remaining to satisfy demand.

The eagle is sharp as always, while merging occurs over Liberty's curls and the obverse stars. Both sides are moderately bright with straw-gold color and deep accents around the periphery. Abrasions are minimal, and none are singularly important. Census: 26 in 55, 32 finer (2/18).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 25S6, PCGS# 8178)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
