1834 Classic Two and a Half, MS64
Large Head, Scarce HM-4 Variety

1834 $2 1/2 Large Head, HM-4, R.4, MS64 NGC. Stars 2 and 3 are repunched, and the M in AMERICA lacks a diagonal. HM-4 is second scarcest among 1834 Classic two and a half varieties. It is much more elusive than the HM-1 Small Head, and much scarcer in better grades than the "Wide AM" HM-2. Our online auction archives do not show a higher-graded example of HM-4. In fact, the Haynor reference states "the highest known grade for an HM-4 is MS63. It appears only a handful of times in Mint State." This sun-gold near-Gem is smooth aside from delicate marks west of star 11. The strike is good, and the eye appeal is undeniable. Encapsulated in a circa-2000 holder.
