Impressive Borderline Gem 1836 Quarter Eagle, Block 8 Variety

1836 $2 1/2 Block 8 MS 64 PCGS. Head of 1835. This issue boasts the highest original mintage (547,986 pieces) of any quarter eagle from 1796-1850, and one might be tempted to deduce that the 1836 is a plentiful coin in all grades. In Mint State, however, this issue is anything but common. Since many pre-1834 gold coins were hoarded and melted during the 1820s and 1830s, most examples of this lighter weight issue were needed to fill the resultant void in domestic circulation. Most Mint State survivors of this issue are of the Head of 1835 variety. This example is somewhat weakly impressed over the central highpoints, but the balance of the devices are crisply defined. The color is an interesting blend of orange-gold and green-gold hues that is suggestive of originality. Both sides are frosty and typically abrasion-free for the grade.
