Extremely Rare Variety 10 Script 8
    1836 Quarter Eagle, AU53
    Finest of Three Known

1836 $2 1/2 Script 8 AU53 NGC. First Head of 1837, Breen-6143, Variety 10, R.7. According to Classic quarter eagle researcher Mark Borckardt, John McCloskey is credited with the discovery of the extremely rare Variety 10. The rarity of the variety is such that this may be the first time it has been photographed within any auction catalog. McCloskey owns the discovery piece--which is in a lower grade than the present coin--and has seen one other, which he graded VF. The key attribution points are the locations of stars 6 and 13 relative to the bust.
This is an unmarked and partly lustrous straw-gold example. The centers are softly impressed, as is the case with the McCloskey specimen, while the borders are sharply defined. A minute obverse rim ding at 12 o'clock will identify this important piece for the early gold die variety specialist.(Registry values: P1)
