1836 Two and a Half, MS63
1836 $2 1/2 Script 8 MS63 NGC. Breen-6143, Variety 11, R.2.
A lustrous olive-gold example with minimal marks and moderate
inexactness of strike at the centers. Breen (1988) describes
various portrait styles on 1836 quarter eagles, including the Heads
of 1834, 1835, and 1837. The differences are minor and reminiscent
of Christian Gobrecht's tinkering with the designs on 1839 cents.
Variety 11 has a Head of 1835 but is more interesting for its
lengthy obverse die cracks. Census: 57 in 63, 21 finer
values: P1) (NGC ID# 25FU, PCGS# 7694)
Script 8, Head of 1835
Weight: 4.18 grams
