    1838 Quarter Eagle, MS63+
    Conditionally Rare, A Better Date

1838 $2 1/2 MS63+ PCGS Secure. Breen-6146, Variety 19, R.2. The 1838 is a better date among Classic Head quarter eagles, especially in Mint State. Most coins in Uncirculated condition grade no better than MS62. This Select example is conditionally rare. It is also one of only two pieces for the grade that are Plus-designated -- one at PCGS and the other at NGC (4/18). The strike is sharp on the obverse and just a touch weak on the reverse at the left shield corner and wing junction. Some light handling marks on Liberty's cheek and in the open fields define the grade but are not detracting, and both sides have lovely yellow-gold luster with soft luminance. Population: 8 in 63 (1 in 63+), 8 finer (4/18).(Registry values: P1)
