    Description

    1838-C Two and a Half, AU53
    Lowest Classic Head Mintage

1838-C $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Variety 20. William Kneass' Classic Head quarter eagle series was short-lived, spanning from 1834 to 1839. The branch mint issues starting in 1838 all pose a certain challenge, but none moreso than the 1838-C with its low mintage of 7,880 coins. This orange and greenish-gold two and a half showcases needle-sharp definition on the portrait, date, and popular obverse mintmark. Reverse softness is often found on coins from this issue. Lightly marked and partly lustrous. Census: 7 in 53, 46 finer (8/16).
