    Popular Obverse Mintmark Style
    1838-C Quarter Eagle, Choice AU

1838-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Breen-6147, Winter-1, Variety 20, R.3. The popular introductory-year C-mint quarter eagle issue from the fledgling Charlotte Mint which, along with new branch facilities in New Orleans and Dahlonega, represented political and economic decentralization in the United States during the great mid-19th century migrations to the south and west. The Obverse Mintmark subtype of 1838 and 1839 makes this piece an especially desirable one from the mintage of 7,880 coins. Equally alluring are the well detailed surfaces, which show minor softness on the obverse stars and the central reverse. Good luster appears over greenish-gold surfaces splashed with hints of rose. Population: 13 in 55, 15 finer (1/11).(Registry values: P3)
