    1838-C Classic Quarter Eagle, AU58
First Year for This Historic Southern Mint

1838-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Breen-6147, Variety-20, R.3. Only one variety is known for the 1838-C and all have a widely repunched mintmark. This piece is from the later, but not terminal state of the dies. Two reverse die cracks are evident from the rim at 10 o'clock to the eagle's right wing, and the other travels from the beak to the left point of the shield.
While the 1838-C is not as rare as one might imagine from its limited mintage of only 7,880 pieces, it is an immensely popular issue. This is the first year of issue for the Charlotte Mint and one of only two years that facility produced quarter eagles of the Classic design. This reasonably well-defined example displays uniform reddish patina over each side, and there are only small abrasions scattered about, none meriting individual mention.(Registry values: P3)
