Description

1838-C Classic Quarter Eagle, AU58
HM-1 Variety, First Year Issue

1838-C $2 1/2 HM-1, R.4, AU58 NGC. This is the only die marriage used to strike a low mintage of 7,880 coins for the first year of the Charlotte branch mint. The two numeral 8's in the date are script in form, and the C mintmark is boldly recut higher. On the reverse, the eagle has just a faint tongue engraved. This is a mid-die state with a die crack from edge to above the eagle's right wing.

This example has attractive antique gold toning, with smooth light wear on the high points. The surfaces have only a few small marks, none of which are distracting. Overall, the coin has excellent presentation and great eye appeal. The first year quarter eagle from the Charlotte Mint is always in strong demand, and is also the rarest Classic Gold quarter eagle with a mintmark.
