Description

1838-C HM-1 Quarter Eagle, AU58+
First Charlotte Mint Coinage

1838-C $2 1/2 HM-1, R.4, AU58+ PCGS. CAC. On March 3, 1835, Congress approved "An act to establish branches of the mint of the United States." Those branches were to be located in New Orleans, Louisiana for the coinage of gold and silver coins, Charlotte, North Carolina for the coinage of gold only, and Dahlonega, Georgia, also for the coinage of gold only. While New Orleans was considered a large city at the time, having a population of about 100,000 in 1840, Charlotte and Dahlonega were small towns having populations numbering less than 1,000 residents at the time. However, both locations were convenient to gold mining operations. The first production of each branch was in 1838. Virtually Mint State, this impressive piece has a trace of rub on the high points with minuscule handling marks. Both sides display lustrous green-gold surfaces with lovely peripheral rose toning. Population: 16 in 58 (2 in 58+), 5 finer. CAC: 7 in 58, 3 finer (7/23).
