    1838-C Quarter Eagle, XF Details
    Early Branch Mint Gold Coin

1838-C $2 1/2 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Breen-6147, Variety 20, R.3 There are many good reasons the 1838-C quarter eagle is as popular as it is. This was the first year of operation at the Charlotte Mint. The 1838-C is one of two Classic Head quarter eagles struck at the facility and features the desirable obverse mintmark. It is also one of the first branch mint gold coins and claims a low mintage of 7,880 pieces. The noted cleaning is largely inoffensive. Yellow-gold surfaces show the number of marks one would expect to find on a circulated gold coin of this era. Strike detail is slightly better on the obverse.
