Description

Pedigreed MS 63 1838-C Quarter Eagle--A Lower Condition Census Coin

1838-C MS 63 NGC. Great demand explains the value of this issue, rather than a low mintage or low survival in high grades. What is so desirable to collectors is its first-year of issue status combined with the Classic design and obverse mintmark. This is the fifth finest known specimen and is identifiable as such by a small mark on the jaw of Liberty. The striking details on this piece are exceptionally strong in all areas, except on several of the obverse stars, and a wire rim encircles the obverse. The green-gold color of the coin is uniform throughout and there are no alloy spots on either side. Numerous small abrasions are sprinkled over each side, but the only mentionable ones are the small mark listed above, and a shallow, arrow-shaped scratch in the field to the right of the eagle's head on the reverse.
