Description

1839 Two and a Half, AU53
Classic Series Key Issue

1839 $2 1/2 HM-1, R.4, AU53 NGC. Despite the 1839/8 designation on the previous generation NGC holder, the ungainly 9 in the date is either from a defective punch or the result of repunching on the digit. The 8 in the date is repunched south. Often overlooked, the 1839 Philadelphia quarter eagle is by far the scarcest P-mint quarter eagle in the Classic series and is arguably scarcer than any of its 1839 mintmarked counterparts. This caramel-gold example shows lightly worn motifs that define the AU53 grade. Soft mint luster remains throughout the nearly Choice surfaces that harbor only occasional minor marks. NGC Census: 12 in 53, 68 finer (4/26).
