Classic Series Key Issue
1839 $2 1/2 HM-1, R.4, AU53 NGC. Despite the 1839/8
designation on the previous generation NGC holder, the ungainly 9
in the date is either from a defective punch or the result of
repunching on the digit. The 8 in the date is repunched south.
Often overlooked, the 1839 Philadelphia quarter eagle is by far the
scarcest P-mint quarter eagle in the Classic series and is arguably
scarcer than any of its 1839 mintmarked counterparts. This
caramel-gold example shows lightly worn motifs that define the AU53
grade. Soft mint luster remains throughout the nearly Choice
surfaces that harbor only occasional minor marks. NGC Census: 12 in
