    Description

    Almost Uncirculated 1839/8-D Quarter Eagle

1839/8-D $2 1/2 AU53 ANACS. Winter 1-B. This variety show several distinctive reverse die cracks and the branch stem is located entirely to the left of the D. This is the rarer of the two known for this first-year Quarter Eagle from the Dahlonega Mint. Winter (1997) estimates that only 5,500 coins of the 13,674 pieces produced are of this die marriage. The 1839-D is one of the more common D-mint Quarter Eagles with perhaps 125-135 coins extant. Nevertheless, high grade circulated examples always perform well at auction due to this issue's status as the only Classic Quarter Eagle to bear the D mintmark. A bit weakly struck in the centers, the rich green-gold surfaces show generous portions of remaining luster and there are minimal field marks on each side.
