About Uncirculated 1839-C Quarter Eagle, Winter 3-C (Recut Date) Variety

1839-C $2 1/2 AU53 PCGS. Recut Date. Winter 3-C. Only 165-175 1839-C Quarter Eagles are believed extant from an original mintage of 18,140 pieces. It is a testament to the rarity of C-mint gold coins that this Classic issue is actually the second most common Quarter Eagle from this branch mint. As one of only two C-mint Quarter Eagles of the Classic type, the 1839-C, nevertheless, is always in demand among type collectors and specialists alike. Winter estimates that only 30% of surviving 1839-C Quarter Eagles are of the Recut Date variety, which means that it is appreciably scarcer than the overdate. This variety is also the poorest struck of the three known die marriage of the '39-C, with the present example displaying some softness of detail in the center of the obverse and over the star centrils. Other than that, the features are sufficiently sharp with only light wear over the higher points. The olive-gold surfaces are expectantly abraded for a circulated representative of this second-year C-mint Quarter Eagle.
