Popular 1839-C Quarter Eagle, Choice AU Condition

1839-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Recut 39. Variety 3-C, McCloskey-C, R.3. Only 165-175 1839-C quarter eagles are believed extant today out of an original mintage of 18,140 pieces. Approximately 33-36 pieces are known in AU condition, and these pieces are very popular with collectors because of the Classic design and obverse mintmark. The devices on this piece are a bit softly defined but there are surprisingly few abrasions on either side, the only ones that bear individual mention being a pair of parallel marks in front of Liberty's foremost hair curl.
