    Classic 1839-C Quarter Eagle AU58

1839-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Recut 39, Winter 3-C, McCloskey-C, Breen-6150, R.3. At one time, this obverse die was considered to be an overdate. Numismatists soon realized that other mints also struck quarter eagles with a similar look to the 9 in the date, which suggested that the 9 punch was defective. Overdate or not, the 3 is undoubtedly widely recut south. Classic quarter eagles were struck at the Charlotte Mint only during its first two years of operation, and survivors are popular as a short-lived type. The present bold piece displays ample luster within the plumage and curls. Careful inspection locates a few minor marks, none of which require further elaboration. The reverse die displays distinctive die cracks through the beak, the first 2 in the denomination, and above the left (facing) wingtip.(Registry values: P5)
