Not Sold Description
Near-Mint 1839-C Two and a Half
1839-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Recut 39, Winter 3-C, McCloskey-C,
Breen-6150, R.3. Formerly thought to be an overdate, the final
digits have now been proven to be recut instead. Two obverse dies
were used for this issue and only one reverse die was employed. The
reverse die was the same one used on the 1838-C, thus it has more
extensive die cracking. The surfaces are bright green-gold with a
faint overlay of reddish patina. Slightly soft on the high points
on the obverse, the reverse is better detailed. Only tiny handling
marks are seen on each side, none of which merit individual
mention. (Registry values: P5)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25G4, PCGS# 7699, GSID# 8259)
