    Description

    1839-C Two and a Half, MS61
    First of Two Uncirculated Examples

1839-C $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. Formerly designated as an overdate, there is little to suggest an underdigit on this piece. The 1839-C is generally a well-produced issue with a surprising number of high-grade (AU and better) examples known. However, in mint condition only five to ten pieces are believed extant. To underscore the depth of the Cherokee Collection, two Uncirculated pieces, this one and the following MS62, are contained in this impressive offering. The fields on this piece show obvious die striations, which produced the bright, semiprooflike finish seen on each side. The striking details are
generally well brought up, but the usual high point softness is seen on Liberty's hair curls around the face, the star centers, and the wings on the eagle. The bright yellow-gold color has taken on a slight reddish cast, most apparent around the devices and within the recesses.
