    Pretty XF45 1839-C Quarter Eagle, McCloskey-B

    1839-C $2 1/2 XF45 PCGS. McCloskey-B, Breen-6149, R.4. The Guide Book notes of this issue that "So-called 9 Over 8 varieties for P, C, and D mints are made from defective punches." This piece appears to be from a late die state that shows no trace of repunching or defects on the 9, which is, however, squat and broad. The 3 shows clear repunching on the right side at the top. The pretty antique-gold surfaces on this coin retain considerable luster, and the appeal is strong.(Registry values: P5)
