    Description

    Important 1839-D Quarter Eagle, AU53

1839-D $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Variety 1-A. Weak Stem. The first quarter eagle produced at the Dahlonega Mint and the only Classic Head quarter eagle coined at that facility define the two-fold importance of the date. Two die pairs, one obverse and two different reverses, were required to produce 13,674 coins. The varieties are immediately distinguished by either a bold or weak branch stem above the D in the denomination. Rarity is approximately equal for each. Slight central weakness is evident on each side, with rich green-gold color that is accented by hints of subtle orange toning. Minor hairlines and light abrasions are evident on each side.(Registry values: P4)
