    Description

    1839-D Quarter Eagle, AU55, Variety-26
    Seldom Located Finer

1839-D $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Breen-6151, Variety-26, R.3. Apparently all known examples of this variety have a weakly impressed stem, thus the two varieties are sometimes referred to as the Weak Stem and Bold Stem reverses. Most 1839-D quarter eagles are from this die pairing, making them the logical choice for this only D-mint Classic two and a half. Probably only 150-175 individual pieces are known of the 1839-D, and in AU it is estimated that 34-36 examples may be extant. The striking definition has uniform friction over the high points, except on the right (facing) tip of the eagle's wing, as usual. Even reddish patina covers each side, and there are only slight field marks evident.(Registry values: P4)
