1839-D $2 1/2 HM-2, R.4, AU53 NGC....
Description
1839-D Quarter Eagle, AU53
HM-2, First Year Issue
1839-D $2 1/2 HM-2, R.4, AU53 NGC. The 1839-D was the first
quarter eagle struck at Dahlonega Mint and it was also the sole
Classic Head design produced there. A detached branch stem
identifies the HM-2 variety, one of only two die marriages for the
challenging 13,674-piece mintage. Butter-gold surfaces on this AU53
example show an uneven strike on the devices -- a common occurrence
for the issue -- although ample frosty luster remains in the
legends, curls, and plumage. A sole contact under the first S in
STATES is the one mark to mention, accompanying some scattered
light abrasions. NGC Census (both varieties combined): 25 in 53, 60
finer (6/26).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25G5, Variety PCGS# 765177, Base PCGS# 7700, GSID# 376914)
