    Description

    1839-D Quarter Eagle, AU Details
    Weak Stem, Variety
    1-A

1839-D $2 1/2 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Winter 1-A, Variety 26, R.3. A popular and in-demand Dahlonega quarter eagle, important to collectors both as a first-year issue and as the only Classic Head quarter eagle from this Mint. A mintage of 13,674 pieces was accomplished from a single obverse die and two reverse dies. This example is from the Winter Variety 1-A die pair, characterized by a Weak Branch Stem, the result of lapping the reverse die.

Although designated by NGC as Improperly Cleaned, this coin retains its appeal and crisp AU sharpness. The evidence of light cleaning is visible with a glass, but there are no overt hairlines or other distractions when viewed in hand. The coin retains some mint luster and pleasing, olive-gold surfaces. A nice example despite the minimal cleaning for a perceptive bidder.(Registry values: P4)
