    Description

Lower Condition Census 1839-D Quarter Eagle, MS61

1839-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-B. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). This is the scarcer of the two varieties of the year with approximately 5,500 pieces struck. Some 150-175 examples are believed known today of both varieties and in all grades with only 7-9 Mint State pieces extant. This piece is tied for fifth finest known with several other pieces on the current Condition Census. Just a bit softly struck, the reddish tinted surfaces show good luster characteristics and there are numerous small but individually insignificant abrasions scattered over each side, as one would expect from the grade.(#7700) (Registry values: P4)
