    Description

    1839-D Quarter Eagle, MS62
    Richly Patinated Rarity
    Important Mint State Offering

1839-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Winter 1-A, Variety 26, R.3. Quarter eagles were struck at all four active mints in 1839. Dahlonega coinage amounted to 13,674 pieces, all from locally mined ore. Although Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Head design replaced the Classic Head dies for the half eagle in 1839, the design change had not yet been implemented on the quarter eagle denomination. Thus, a one-year Classic Head type coin was produced at the Dahlonega Mint. The mintmark is on the obverse above the date.

This Mint State example is conditionally rare. Although Doug Winter estimates as many as 250 examples of the date survive overall, few of them are Uncirculated. PCGS reports 17 Mint State grading events, including likely duplication. It is an arduous task to find an attractive Mint State 1839-D quarter eagle, and it is nearly impossible to locate a piece finer than MS62. The last time was handled a coin in this grade was the Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2011), where lot 5329 realized $34,500. We have not seen a finer coin since 2006. The present offering is thus incredible for the Dahlonega gold specialist. The coin is impressively sharp and satiny with rich orange-gold and olive patina. In the border regions, deeper lilac and russet overtones are apparent, attesting to the originality of the surfaces. A few other 1839-D quarter eagles of this quality are known, but only this one is currently on the market. Population: 8 in 62, 4 finer (4/19).(Registry values: P4)
