    Description

Extremely Rare and High Grade (MS63) 1839-D Quarter Eagle

1839-D $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Winter 1-B. This is the scarcer of the two varieties and it is estimated that only 5,500 pieces were struck using this reverse die out of the 13,674 pieces produced altogether. It is believed that 125-135 pieces are extant today in all grades, and while AU coins are not too difficult to locate, Uncirculated examples are very rare. This coin appears to be tied for the # 3 position on Winter's Condition Census with the Sotheby's 6/96 coin. The surfaces display the rich reddish-coppery color that is seen on uncleaned and original 1839-D Quarter Eagles. A bit softly struck in the centers, the only mark of any consequence is a shallow scrape in the lower left obverse field.
