Description

Desirable 1839-D Quarter Eagle

1839-D $2 1/2 PCGS Genuine. Variety 1-A, McCloskey-A, R.3. The branch stem is weakly defined and extends to the upright of the D in the denomination. The PCGS number ending in .98 suggests Damage as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, the coin has the details of an AU specimen (and is possibly whizzed). This bright yellow piece is well defined save for a touch of softness on a couple of stars and the eagle's wings. A number of tiny abrasions are seen in the fields, but none merit individual mention. The 1839-D is popular as the only Classic Head quarter eagle struck at the Dahlonega Mint.(Registry values: P4, N4)
