    Description

Highly Desirable 1839-D Classic Quarter Eagle

1839-D $2 1/2 XF45 ANACS. Variety 1-A. The more frequently seen of the two varieties, easily attributed by the branch stem over the denomination that was weakened by die lapping. Although the ANACS holder lists this as an 1839/8, Winter states that the 9 was improperly cut making the date appear as if it is an overdate which is incorrect. This high grade representative is adequately struck with even bright golden patina. An identifier, a couple of marks are seen in the reverse field above the eagle's head. One of the most popular D-mint Quarter Eagles primarily because it is the only Classic issue struck at the historic Southern Mint. (#7700)
