Condition Census Uncirculated 1839-D Quarter Eagle

1839-D MS 60 NGC. From the final year of the Classic Head design, the '39-D (which has also been incorrectly interpreted to be a '39/8 overdate) is a rare, low mintage issue that is most often encountered well circulated. Only 13,674 pieces were produced and even a low-end AU causes a stir among Southern gold enthusiasts. This coin is typically soft in the centers, with delicate orange patina over yellow-gold surfaces. It is one of a dozen or so mint state examples known to exist and sneaks in the lower-end of the Condition Census for the issue. Population: 1 in 60, 2 finer (10/97).
Ex: September 1967 Sale (Lester Merkin), lot 297 at $302.
