    Description

    1839-O Two and a Half, AU53
    Inaugural New Orleans Issue

1839-O $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Breen-6152, Variety 27, R.3. A die crack in the lower left reverse margin forms a large retained cud in this die state. The coin is lightly worn but sharply detailed with smooth, olive-gold surfaces. This is the first quarter eagle production from the New Orleans Mint, which became operation in 1838. It is also the sole O-mint Classic Head quarter eagle. Type collectors and Southern gold specialists alike consider this piece to be singularly important in the New Orleans quarter eagle series.
