    Description

    1839-O Quarter Eagle, AU55
    First-Year New Orleans Issue

1839-O $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Breen-6152, Variety 27, R.3. High Date, Wide Fraction. Obverse Mintmark. While all early branch mint gold is scarce, this New Orleans issue has a special appeal as the first gold denomination produced at the New Orleans Mint. Likewise, it is the only example of the Classic Head design for those who type by Mint. This piece was likely struck from a late state of the dies, with weakness at the margins and other signs of die lapping. Normal circulation marks appear for the Choice About Uncirculated grade. Mint luster remains on both sides of this yellow-gold example.(Registry values: P3)
