Very Choice About Uncirculated 1839-O Classic Two-and-a-Half

1839-O $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. The only Classic Quarter Eagle produced in the New Orleans Mint, the '39-O is an immensely popular coin among Southern gold specialists. Despite a paltry original mintage of 17,781 pieces, the 1839-O is the second most common O-mint Quarter Eagle after the 1843-O Small Date, and it is the easiest to obtain in grades above the XF level of preservation. This is a sharply detailed example with rich copper-gold color and a few sprays of lighter patina here and there. A couple of pinscratches over and before Liberty's portrait are somewhat distracting, but there are few other noteworthy abrasions. Some original mint luster adheres to the protected areas around the peripheries. According to Winter (1992), only 25-35 1839-O Classic Quarter Eagles are extant in AU.
The consignor purchased this coin from Doug Winter.
