Description
1839-O Quarter Eagle, AU Details
HM-1, Only Classic Issue
1839-O $2 1/2 HM-1, R.3 -- Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine. AU
Details. The New Orleans Mint did not coin quarter eagles or
half eagles during its maiden year, thus the 1839-O two and a half
is the sole Classic issue from the Southern facility. The mintage
amounted to a mere 17,781 pieces, and those were divided between
two die marriages. They are known as the High Date, Wide Fraction
(HM-1) and Low Date, Close Fraction (HM-2), with the latter
moderately scarcer. This HM-1 example displays well-defined but
faintly hairlined olive-green surfaces. No marks are of singular
significance.From The JGC Collection.
