Description

1839-O HM-1 Quarter Eagle, MS63
Wide Fraction Variant

1839-O $2 1/2 HM-1, R.3, MS63 PCGS. Ex: HW Bass Jr Coll. This is the Wide Fraction variety that has the fraction bar separated from the numerator and the denominator on the reverse. It is also known as the High Date variety with the date high above the border. While this example is not one of the six finest in the Condition Census, it is certainly close. In Classic Gold Coins, Daryl J. Haynor records two MS65 examples and four MS64 coins as the finest known. His observations are consistent with other population data. Hints of green appear on the brilliant yellow-gold surfaces of this sharply detailed quarter eagle from the first year of the denomination at New Orleans. This example features full satin luster and excellent eye appeal. Population: 7 in 63, 4 finer (3/25).
Ex: Lester Merkin (4/1970), lot 659; Harry W. Bass, Jr. (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 315.
