Description

Scarce Uncirculated 1839-O Quarter Eagle

1839-O $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Low Date, Close Fraction, Breen-6153, McCloskey-B, R.4. This distinctive variety not only has the date placed low in the exergual area but it also shows a disconnected berry on the reverse and malformed arrowheads. Interestingly, most examples of this variety have a medallic alignment, as does this piece. The reverse of this coin shows extensive, almost terminal die cracking. Well, but not fully struck up, the surfaces are bright orange-gold. A couple of marks limit the grade to the MS61 level, one behind the hair curls on the obverse and another in the reverse field between the eagle's head and left (facing) wing. (Registry values: P3)
