    Uncirculated 1839-O Quarter Eagle

1839-O MS 60 NGC. Low Date; Close Fraction. Reverse rotated 180 degrees. This first of two Mint State 1839-O quarter eagles from the Ronald W. Brown Collection of New Orleans Mint Coinage is well struck. Unlike the second piece, it has a harder, semi-frosty type of luster with attractive, natural, yellow-gold and orange color. The surfaces are a bit abraded, but this is an unquestionably "new" coin.
This is the scarcer of the two major varieties of 1839-O quarter eagles. Unlike the Wide Fraction variety, the Close Fraction shows a berry and the arrowheads are malformed. These two varieties are easily determined with the naked eye and, in our opinion, should gain in popularity among collectors in the coming years as they become more widely recognized.
From the Ronald W. Brown Acadiana Collection; Ex: Jascha Heifetz Collection (Superior, 10/89), lot 3992.
