    Description

    Near-Mint 1839-O Quarter Eagle

1839-O $2 1/2 AU 58 NGC. The '39-O is a popular issue whose reputation is based upon its status as the only Classic quarter eagle from the New Orleans mint, its obverse mintmark, and the perception of its scarcity. While not as scarce in all grades as it is commonly believed, this issue is very challenging in Choice AU and strict mint condition. Only 25-35 pieces are believed known in the various grades of AU. Usually seen with weak striking details, especially on the reverse, this piece is a pleasing exception with the only area of softness on several of the star radials. Lightly abraded from brief handling during its time in circulation. One feature needs to be mentioned on the obverse. It appears that at the time of encapsulation there were several tiny pieces of debris that were pressed onto the surface of the coin by the plastic encasement. Apparently whatever these tiny pieces of debris are, they are not inert and have caused hazy brown spots to form around them. It appears this is reversible--the coin should be cracked out, the debris removed, then the coin should be reholdered. This is not an important distraction but it is something we felt should be pointed out to potential buyers.
