Description

1839-D HM-1 Quarter Eagle, MS61
Antique-Gold Surfaces Sans Abrasions

1839-D $2 1/2 HM-1, R.5, MS61 NGC. This piece has pleasing antique-gold coloration, with fewer abrasions and more eye appeal than one might infer from the grade. Some minor central strike softness, visible on the high points of Liberty's hair, is typical.

The Dahlonega Mint only produced Classic Head gold coins for one year per denomination -- 1839 for quarter eagles, and 1838 for half eagles. While this Southern Mint did produce half eagles in 1839 as well, they are all of the succeeding Liberty Head design. Since many type or date collectors opt for an Classic Head quarter and half eagle from the Dahlonega Mint, demand is ratcheted up significantly. Supply is also limited by the low mintage of this issue, at just 13,674 coins, creating the ideal circumstances for strong collector demand.

The present HM-1 variety is slightly scarcer than the R.4 HM-2, the only other variety of the year. It is most readily identified by the stem tip extending just left of the upright of the D in 5 D. Other diagnostics include the arrowheads touching the CA of AMERICA as well as numerous reverse die cracks. Winter estimates that only 5,500 examples were made with the rarer Bold Stem reverse.
