    Description

    1838-C Quarter Eagle
    AU Sharpness

1838-C $2 1/2 -- Harshly Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. HM-1, Variety 20, Winter 1. R.4. Struck during the first year of coinage operations at the Charlotte Mint, the 1838-C had a low mintage of just 7,880 pieces -- a Classic Head series low. A single die pair produced the entire mintage. This is a sharply struck example with AU Details, but cleaned as noted on the PCGS holder. In our opinion, the harshness of the cleaning is less objectionable than it sounds. Lightly abraded surfaces lack most of their luster, but there are no heavy marks.
