    Description

Elusive 1847 Hawaii Cent, Medcalf 2-CC1
MS64 Brown, Second Rarest Die Variety

1847 1C Hawaii Cent MS64 Brown PCGS. CAC. Medcalf 2CC-1, with crosslet 4 in the date and 18 berries on the reverse, considered the second rarest die variety. A berry is centered below the right side of the W. The Crosslet 4, 18 Berries is the second most difficult of six die marriages used on these interesting Hawaiian cents, trailing only the elusive Plain 4, 15 Berries 7x8. This is a pleasing, pristine near-Gem piece with considerable muted red on each side, in spite of the Brown designation. The surfaces are also remarkably free from carbon, which should make this coin especially interesting to the specialist. (NGC ID# 2C52, PCGS# 10965)
