    Choice Uncirculated 1847 Hawaii Cent

1847 1C Hawaii Cent MS 64 Red PCGS. Plain 4. 15 Berries. The production of Hawaiian cents was made necessary by a chronic shortage of coined money in the Kingdom during this period, but their design was disliked by most natives. The portrait of King Kamehameha III was poorly executed and the denomination "hapa hanele" was misspelled as HAPA HANERI. They circulated widely, nonetheless, even after being demonetized in 1884. The present example is one of the finest we have ever offered. The surfaces are a lustrous reddish-tan and have a lightness of color similar to that seen on unmellowed U.S. two cent pieces. There is excellent definition on the King's portrait and only minor bluntness is noticed on the bow of the wreath. Close scrutiny reveals a few light carbon flecks on the obverse, the most annoying of which is located above the 84 in the date. Population: 3 in 64, none finer (2/00). (NGC ID# 2C52, PCGS# 10967)
