1881 Hawaii Five Cent Pattern, AU53
    Rare Original Striking, Medcalf-2CN-1

1881 5C Hawaii Five Cents AU53 PCGS Secure. Medcalf-2CN-1, KM-2. According to Medcalf, a nickel mine owner in New Caledonia met King Kalakaua during the latter's trip around the world. The mine owner compelled the Paris Mint to strike 200 pattern five cent pieces. The venture did not result in an official coinage, perhaps because the Hawaiian Motto was misspelled, beginning with AU instead of UA. The country name was stated as the Sandwich Islands, the British name for the Hawaii. The pattern issue is rare today, and should not be confused with later aluminum "restrikes" made from copy dies. Original pieces are identified by a small cross at the top of the crown. The present stone-gray example displays light wear but is free from appreciable marks or carbon. (NGC ID# 2C53, PCGS# 10975)
