Description

1881 Hawaii Five Cent, AU Details
Original, MAILLECHORT Edge, M. 2CN-1

1881 5C Hawaii Five Cents, MAILLECHORT Edge -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. M. 2CN-1. In 1881, King Kalakaua of Hawaii became the first emperor to circumnavigate the world. During his travels, he encountered a New Caledonia nickel mine owner, who requested the Paris Mint strike 200 five cent pieces for Hawaii. These were patterns, and did not circulate in Hawaii. Some original examples, including the present lot, display MAILLECHORT on the edge. Maillechort is a French word that translates to English as German silver. Originals can be distinguished from aluminum "restrikes" by the presence of a small cross atop the crown. This silver-gray five-cent piece is mildly bright from a wipe, but retains ample luster throughout the legends and portrait.
