    Description

Rare 1881 Hawaiian Five Cents on a Thin Nickel Planchet

1881 5C Hawaii Five Cents AU 50. Thin Nickel Planchet Restrike. Type of 2CN-1. The original 200 pieces of Hawaiian five cents were struck in Paris in 1881 by the owner of a New Caledonian nickel company as patterns for a proposed Hawaiian coinage. The coinage was never adopted. A small number of pieces were struck with a design similar to the original coinage on thin and thick nickel, thin and thick aluminum, and thin and thick copper planchets. These pieces were struck sometime after 1881 from different, unofficial dies. The restrikes can be easily distinguished from the original 200 pieces by the absence of a cross on the top of the crown. Listed in Hawaiian Coins, Tokens and Paper Money, by Maurice Gould as R.8. (NGC ID# 2C53, PCGS# 10975)
