    Description

Exceptional 1882 Haiku Rial Plantation Token
Medcalf TE-15, MS66 Red and Brown

1882 Haiku Rial Plantation Token MS66 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Medcalf TE-15. A fantastic representative, this is the sole Red and Brown example PCGS has graded to date, with NGC having graded only one Red and Brown example as well, with that piece also at the MS66 level (3/13). This Premium Gem displays bold details, pristine surfaces, and rich colors that include shades of red, brown, yellow-brown, and olive. This is truly an exceptional piece.
Tokens were produced by several private firms for use at the company stores belonging to a number of Hawaiian businesses during the 19th Century. The Haiku Sugar Company was located east of Wailuku. The denomination, one rial, was based on the Spanish real and was equivalent to about a day's wages for a laborer on the plantation. Per Medcalf, the Haiku Plantation tokens are considered "the most artistic and well struck of the early metal tokens." (NGC ID# 2UBZ, PCGS# 600519)

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
